Does the air compressor room need a fire door?

Explanation on the necessity of setting fire doors in the air compressor room

In the construction of industrial plants, the air compressor room is the core facility of the compressed air supply system, and its fire safety design must strictly comply with relevant national regulations. Based on industry practice and technical standards, the necessity of setting fire doors is explained as follows:

1. Regulatory basis and compliance requirements

According to the requirements of “Code for Fire Protection in Building Design”(GB50016) and “General Code for Fire Protection in Buildings”(GB55037):

  1. Fire zoning
    • The air compressor room needs to be divided into independent fire prevention zones based on the building area and fire risk. When the area of the machine room exceeds the specification limit (usually 500㎡) or is not separated from adjacent areas by a firewall with a fire resistance limit of not less than 3 hours, fire doors must be installed.
  2. Safety evacuation requirements
    • As an equipment room, the evacuation doors of the air compressor room must adopt Class B and above fire doors to ensure the effectiveness of the safe evacuation channel for people in case of fire.
  3. Mandatory regulations for special places
    • Equipment rooms such as ventilation rooms and air conditioning rooms are clearly required to be equipped with Class A fire doors. If the air compressor room shares a fire zone with the above places, the relevant requirements must be met simultaneously.

2. The core functions and value of fire doors

  1. Fire risk isolation
    • There is a potential fire risk in the air compressor room due to equipment operation, grease lubrication and electrical systems. Fire doors can form fire-resistant barriers in the early stages of a fire, preventing fire from spreading to other areas through the opening.
  2. smoke control
    • The fire door sealing structure can effectively block the spread of toxic smoke and buy valuable time for evacuation. Experimental data shows that qualified fire doors can prevent smoke penetration from exceeding 90% within 1.5 hours.
  3. Structural integrity assurance
    • During the fire resistance test, the fire door needs to maintain the average temperature rise of the back fire surface ≤140℃ to ensure structural stability in the fire environment and avoid the loss of fire zoning functions due to the failure of the door body.

3. Alternatives and applicable conditions

Equivalent alternative measures may be adopted when the following conditions are met:

  1. Firewall alternatives
    • When the air compressor room is completely separated from the adjacent area by a reinforced concrete firewall with a fire resistance limit of ≥3 hours, and when the firewall has holes, special fire roller shutters can be used instead of the fire door.
  2. Gas fire extinguishing system supporting
    • If a machine room equipped with IG541, heptafluoropropane and other gas fire-extinguishing systems realizes automatic fire detection and linkage closing functions, the fire resistance rating requirements of fire doors can be appropriately reduced, but Class B fire doors still need to be installed as basic protection.
  3. Special Scenarios Exemption
    • When an independently constructed air compressor room (spaced from the main building ≥10 meters) and meets natural smoke exhaust conditions, the installation of fire doors can be exempted after special fire protection review.

4. Industry practice suggestions

  1. Standardized configuration plan
    • conventional configuration: For a single air compressor room with a power ≤110kW, it is recommended to install Class B fire doors to meet daily maintenance and basic protection needs.
    • enhanced configuration: For multiple computer rooms with online operation or power>110kW, it is recommended to use Class A fire doors, equipped with access control systems and emergency evacuation instructions.
  2. Operation and maintenance management requirements
    • Fire doors need to be kept normally closed, and door closers, sequencers and other accessories should be inspected monthly to ensure that the automatic closing function is effective in case of fire.
  3. integrated defence system
    • It is recommended to build a three-in-one protection system of “fire door + automatic fire extinguishing + smoke detection” to achieve early warning and disposal of fires through a fire linkage controller.

V. Conclusion

Whether the air compressor room is equipped with fire doors requires comprehensive evaluation:

  • Scenes must be set: Screw air compressors that are mandatory by regulations, are adjacent to crowded places, and use combustible lubricating oil.
  • Exemptive Scenarios: An independently constructed machine room equipped with a complete gas fire extinguishing system and passed special review.

Enterprises should select the most suitable fire protection design plan based on their own process characteristics, risk levels and compliance requirements, and regularly carry out fire drills and facility testing to ensure the long-term safe operation of the air compressor room.
