What is the general design life of pressure vessels?

The design life of pressure vessels must be based onMaterial characteristics, working conditions, design specificationsComprehensive determination is usually divided into the following three categories:

1. Conventional design life

container type Design life range typical cases
Carbon steel container 10-20 years Gas storage tank, heat exchanger
stainless steel container 20-30 years Chemical reactor, low-temperature storage tank
aluminum alloy container 15-25 years Space fuel storage tank (requiring regular inspection)

II. Key influencing factors

  1. corrosion rate
    • Uniform corrosion: The annual corrosion rate of carbon steel in the marine environment is 0.1-0.5mm, and the life calculation formula is:
(δ is the initial wall thickness, δ_c is the critical wall thickness, and v is the corrosion rate)
    • Localized corrosion (e.g. stress corrosion): life may be shortened by 50%-80%
  2. fatigue cycle
    • When pressure fluctuations>20% of the design pressure, life is reduced by 1-3 years per 10,000 cycles
  3. temperature influence
    • Above creep temperature (carbon steel>425℃): For every 50℃ increase, life is shortened by 50%

3. Life assessment method

  1. Fitness-For-Service evaluation
    • Adopt API 579 standard, combining non-destructive testing (UT/RT) and finite element analysis (FEA)
  2. Residual life calculation
    • Formula:(K is the material coefficient, δ_m is the measured minimum wall thickness, P is the working pressure, and D is the container diameter)

4. Measures to extend life

  1. on-line monitoring
    • Install corrosion probes and strain sensors to assess structural integrity in real time
  2. protective coating
    • Thermally sprayed zinc/aluminum coating extends life by 3-5 years
  3. Use for lowering pressure
    • Reduced working pressure by 20%, extended life by 50%-100%
  4. periodic inspection
    • Conduct internal and external inspections every 3-6 years to repair defects in a timely manner

V. Regulatory requirements

  • China’s GB/T 150 Pressure Vessels stipulates: design life ≥10 years
  • ASME VIII-1 Requirements: Risk Based Design (RBI) requires full life cycle costs to be considered
  • EU PED Directive: Critical containers need to pass CE certification and design documents need to include life assessment reports

For containers that exceed the design life, they need to pass a safety assessment by a professional organization and, if necessary, conduct a service-friendly evaluation before they can continue to be used. It is recommended to establish a digital twin model for containers to dynamically predict the remaining life based on operating data.

Will the air compressor break down if it has not been released for too long?

The air compressor has not released water for too long, and it is indeed possible to cause damage to the equipment. During the operation of the air compressor, due to the high internal temperature of the machine head, the moisture in the natural air will form water vapor during the operation of the air compressor. […]

Can the air compressor run 24 hours a day for a long time?

The air compressor can operate 24 hours a day, but a maintenance plan needs to be developed based on the characteristics of the model. The key is to reduce the failure rate through preventive maintenance, and at the same time combine intelligent monitoring systems to achieve condition prediction to ensure the safety and economy of continuous operation.
