Cooling method of screw air compressor

There are two main cooling methods for screw air compressors: air-cooled and water-cooled.

Air-cooled cooling method

Working principle:

Air-cooled cooling method uses the fluidity of the air to take away heat. It is usually achieved through radiators and fans, which transfer heat generated by the compressor to air, and the fan accelerates the flow of air, thus taking away heat.

Advantages:

  1. Strong environmental adaptability: The air-cooled cooling method is not restricted by water resources and can be used basically in any area.
  2. Low Cost: No additional water cooling equipment is required, saving investment costs.
  3. Simple maintenance: The main maintenance work is to regularly clean the fans and radiators, which is relatively simple and convenient.

Disadvantages:

  1. Cooling effect is relatively poor: Compared with water-cooled type, the cooling effect of the air-cooled type may not be significant enough, especially in high temperature environments.
  2. Rooming noise: The operation of the fan will produce a certain amount of noise.
  3. Affected by air quality: If the surrounding air quality is not good, it is easy to pollute the air compressor and compressed air. In environments with poor air quality, if air-cooled cooling is selected, it is recommended to load filter equipment to prevent contamination.

Water-cooled cooling method

Work principle:

Water-cooled cooling method uses the fluidity and temperature difference of cooling water to keep the temperature of the air compressor equipment within a certain range. During the circulation, the cooling water is heat exchanged with the compressor through the water cooler, taking away the heat generated by the compressor. After the cooling water passes through the radiator, the temperature rises, and then cools through the cooling tower or cooler and recycles it.

Advantages:

  1. Good cooling effect: Water-cooled cooling methods usually have better cooling effects, especially in high temperature environments.
  2. Cleaning function: Cooling water can play a certain cleaning role when it flows inside the air compressor, which helps to extend the maintenance and cleaning cycle of the equipment and improve the quality of compressed air.
  3. Stable operation: It is less affected by the external environment and has relatively stable operation.

Disadvantages:

  1. Restricted by water resources: Use in areas with insufficient water resources is restricted.
  2. High maintenance costs: It is necessary to regularly replace the cooling water in the water-cooling equipment and may face problems such as scale, which increases maintenance costs. Cooling water may contain calcium and magnesium plasma, which can easily form scale in the cooler and affect cooling efficiency.
  3. Possible scaling corrosion: Impurities and ions in cooling water may cause corrosion to the cooler and affect the service life of the equipment.

Selecting suggestions

When choosing the cooling method of a screw air compressor, comprehensive consideration should be made based on actual needs, working environment, resource conditions and budget:

  1. Water Resource Conditions: If the water resources are sufficient and the cooling effect is high, the water-cooled cooling method can be selected. If water resources are lacking or high cost and maintenance requirements are high, air-cooled cooling can be selected.
  2. Ambient temperature: In high temperature environments, water-cooled cooling methods usually have better cooling effects. In low temperature environments, air-cooled cooling may be more economical and practical.
  3. Equipment Scale: Generally speaking, large screw air compressors tend to adopt water-cooled cooling to cope with higher heat generation and better heat dissipation needs. Small and medium-sized screw air compressors may adopt more air-cooled cooling.

In general, air-cooled and water-cooled cooling methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Which method is chosen depends on the specific application scenario and needs.
